The Functional Neurosurgery Program Manager has dual responsibilities of  program leadership and clinical practice for the Movement Disorders and Epilepsy Surgical programs that support functional neurosurgery.  

1. The Functional Neurosurgery Program Manager component of the role is responsible for providing  leadership, expertise, collaboration, consultation and mentorship for the team responsible for promoting  evidence-based care of the deep brain stimulation and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for the movement disorder patient population and manages the neurosurgical clinical coordination for surgical epilepsy patients including managing best practice patient care coordination of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit patients. The Functional Neurosurgery Program Manager supports organizational goals and works with the Chief of  Neurosurgery, Clinical Neurophysiologist, the neurology Regional Epilepsy Director and the interdisciplinary clinical team to achieve optimal  standards of care with measurable identified outcomes.  
2. The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) component of the role is a clinical expert and patient advocate.  This position manages a group of clinically complex or resource intensive patients. The APN is  responsible for collaboration with the care team in the post-operative management of the implanted DBS  systems, HIFU patients, and complex epilepsy surgical patients. The APN works with Neurologists and Neuropsiologist to adjust the DBS contact configurations and  stimulating parameters, to optimize symptom benefit and minimize side effects. The APN also supports post surgical evaluation of epilepsy surgical patients in the EMU and in clinic as needed. The APN provides clinical care to patients impacted by movement disorders, Epilepsy, and neurologic conditions. Performs the role of  advanced practice nurse through clinical practice, education, research and consultation with  multidisciplinary groups utilizing a holistic approach to wellness. 
3. The Functional Neurosurgery Program manager is focused on service line leadership to the OR based and promotes best practice related to an area such as neuroscience and ensures appropriate  competency of team members. This requires subspecialty knowledge and education to staff only and  coordinates one consistent area. 
4. The Functional Neurosurgery position is asking someone to develop and support best practice subspecialty functional neurosurgery and manage the infrastructure, community outreach, and education to the nursing department and OR. This  individual needs to build out protocols for the subspecialty service line, see patients, assist in hiring and  managing a team that leads to offering a new service, provide OR support for new procedures, provide  education to the nursing floor and OR teams, manage post op patients and develop care plans, and assist leadership in strategic planning to build out a program 

Program Management:

1. Demonstrates clinical expertise and utilizes advanced assessment skills in areas of clinical specialty to  propose intervention and/or action plan utilizing evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes.
2. Prioritizes and evaluates patient/family progress towards health outcome achievement utilizing a  multidisciplinary approach.  
3. Provides culturally appropriate health promotion and disease/injury prevention strategies based on age, learning theory, epidemiological principles, developmental levels, learning needs, readiness, and ability to learn.  
4. Coordinates the development of evidenced-based practice protocols and standards of care that include interventions and treatments to achieve desired outcomes, including clinical, financial, and patient/family  satisfaction.  
5. Analyzes patterns of variance in practice making recommendations for evidence-based changes to  improve patient outcomes utilizing a multidisciplinary approach.  
6. Facilitates and coordinates/participates in formal or informal educational programs which include  mentoring.  
7. Identifies educational needs of patients/families and collaborates with other multidisciplinary team  members to develop programs and teaching materials.  
8. Serves as a clinical resource person to nursing staff, patients/families, and other multidisciplinary team  members across the continuum to evaluate complex patients and identify appropriate desired outcomes  and interventions.  
9. Evaluates protocols and standards of care in light of current research findings related to specialty area.  
10. Utilizes and disseminates relevant research findings through clinical practice, education or  consultation. 
11. Provides leadership of neurosurgical services team. Collaborates with clinicians to recruit top talent.  Creates an environment that fosters team engagement to retain top talent. Evaluates team member performance daily through coaching  and annually through formal performance assessment process.
12. Coordinates people, places and products to provide clinical guidance and specialty leadership through  participation and/or representation at unit, departmental and hospital meetings, committees, councils, task forces, health fairs, educational presentations and multi-disciplinary rounds, as needed. 
13. Participates in strategic planning and development of the Functional Neurosurgery Program in  alignment with long term development goals of a growing neurosciences department. 
14. Develops educational resource materials independently and in collaboration with other health care  providers. Functions as a mentor, educational resource, consultant, for staff providing clinical expertise.  Serves as a resource and support person for movement disorder and epilepsy patients and their family members both  in the acute care setting and in the community. Works in conjunction with Nursing and Departmental  Education to ensure clinical competency for all staff caring for ventricular assist device patients. 
15. Ensure program’s meeting regulatory adherence including but not limited to: a) JC Parkinson’s disease program standards b) NAEC Epilepsy Center  level 4 standards.
16. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

1. Ongoing assessment, management and education of complex movement  disorder and epilepsy patients with particular focus on surgical evaluation and management. 
2. Assessment, management and oversight of care of post-operative DBS, HIFU, and epilepsy surgical patients. 
3. Participate in pre-operative planning and post-operative management programming care.  
4. Maintain clinical expertise in surgical indications in Parkinson’s disease, Essential tremor, dystonia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Epilepsy.  

5. Screen referrals, communicate with physicians regarding new patients, and refer as needed. 
6. Provide coordination of care with other disciplines, other physicians, and other programs for complex group of neurophysiology patients. 

7. Provide consultation regarding clinical situations. 
8. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

10. Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a  day.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

1.Graduate of NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing 

2. Master's Degree 
3. 10+ years of Experience as an APN 
4. 7+ Years of Experience in Neuroscience specialty
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
