Performs physical therapy techniques under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Senior Physical Therapy Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Executes on a daily basis physical therapy treatments under supervision of a physical therapist to patients which may include exercise, heat, light, ultrasound, water, electricity, gait training, and other rehabilitation techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Provides on a daily basis physical therapy with ongoing input and feedback for patient re-assessment to supervising physical therapist.
  • Coordinates with Utilization Review/Discharge Planning Department and Nursing Department to provide for patient¿s timely discharge and treatment continuation. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Completes daily treatment schedule/assignment.
  • Completes daily patients billing prior to the end of shift.
  • Coordinates Inservice training within the Department for PT staff.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  • Assists as needed physical therapist in providing patient and family education, including but not limited to, exercise programs and assistance in understanding physician¿s diagnosis. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Performs as needed inservice programs for both departmental and Medical Center staff.
  • Participates in and assists with the development of an ongoing quality assurance plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Associate degree in Physical Therapy, from an accredited school.
  • Five years experience in Orthopedics and Sports medicine and ten or more years prior Physical Therapy Assistant experience required.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • BS/MS degree preferred.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Current New Jersey Physical Therapy Associate (NJPTA) license or eligibility, required.
Working Conditions:
  • Extensive employee and outside contacts.
  • Works indoors in a well lighted and ventilated area.
  • Possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment
  • Some direct exposure to contagion, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed.
  • Possibility of strains due to moving patients (or objects).
  • Requires substantial standing, walking, stooping, and lifting.
  • Willingness to work with the realization that errors and incompetency may have serious consequences to patients.
Physical Demands:
  • Requires constant verbal communication in person or using the phone.
  • Requires frequent reading of correspondence, reports, material, etc.
  • Frequently lifts objects from 10 - 150 lbs.
  • Frequently lifts with assistance objects greater than 150 lbs.
  • Frequently carries objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Mental Demands:
  • Requires ability to deal with stress of dealing with public, frequent interruptions, and working on more than one task concurrently.
  • Requires flexibility in order to respond to changes in priorities, special project assignments, and emergency situations.
  • Manage time appropriately to meet patient and department needs.
