Provides a comprehensive religious ministry program of visits, counseling and spiritual guidance to the patients, families and staff. Oversight of Bioethics, pastoral volunteers, contracted clergy, and partnership with community religious advocacy groups (i.e. Bikur Cholim, Jehovah Witness) Facilitates bereavement services for multiple populations. Works closely with Hospice/Palliative care team. Interfaces with the HMH network to ensure that JSUMC provides a standard of spiritual care that is consistent with network standards.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager, Spirital Care at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Committee Leadership: Oversight for Bioethics Consult Committee. Oversees interdisciplinary personnel, schedules regular meetings, prepares agenda, plans and coordinates scheduling of on-call rotation, maintains all committee records, reports regularly. Serves as a liaison with local pastors/priests/rabbis, various parishes and congregations, and community agencies and provides educational experiences which will enhance their skills in ministry.
  • Consultantation and Education: Serves as consultant on religious issues at the campus and system-wide levels. Maintains close relationship with Diversity and Inclusion team as well as the Culture Circle. Participates in the in-service training of the staff of the health system as it relates to specific religious needs and pastoral care. Presents and discusses Pastoral Care issues at staff and unit meetings.
  • Direct Ministry: Provides direct ministry of comfort and support to patients and families through daily visits to all critical care areas. Interacts with nursing and ancillary units to identify patients' religious/spiritual needs needs.
  • Pastoral Care Programs: Coordinates the pastoral care programs with the activities of other departments within the hospital and the health system and participates as a resource person in all matters that pertain to religion, ethics, morals and morale.
  • Participates in network committees as needed
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 5 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of a large variety of faith bases/spiritual backgrounds.
  • Culture Competence and awareness
  • Bachelors Degree required, Masters preferred
