The Patient Engagement Liaison functions as a liaison between the patient/family and Raritan Bay Medical Center by addressing issues and concerns raised by the patient and /or family to improve patient satisfaction and create an environment for patient engagement. To perform customer relations services and comfort measures for patients seeking medical services at Raritan Bay Medical Center.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Patient Engagement Liaison at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provides customer relations services/comfort measures through initiating and maintaining effective communication with patients and/or their families.
  • Introduces self and explains role and other basic non-clinical information.
  • Routinely interacts with patients and/or their families in a consistent and continuous manner. 
  • Provides emotional support to patients and anxious family members.
  • Assists in investigating any patient complaints and refers to appropriate departments. 
  • Makes regular rounds on all patients. 
  • Keeps Manager informed of all complaints on an on-going basis. Responds to patients/family non-clinical requests and communicates problems/concerns/observations to appropriate clinical staff members.
  • Presents self in an approachable, non threatening manner.
  • Assists in helping patients move through the hospital system by acting as a liaison between patients, their families and hospital personnel especially as it relates to housekeeping services or escort services.
  • Maintains effective communication with coworkers in the department and interdepartmentally. 
  • Assists in the Patient Satisfaction process.
  • Interacts with patients in a manner appropriate for individualized, developmental, cultural and spiritual needs for the ages of those patients served.
  • Participates in collaborative problem-solving. Actively promotes non-defensive team building. 
  • Ability to work in challenging situations involving issues of delivering difficult messages including death and dying.
  • Maintains an environment that promotes patient and personal safety.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

 

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • A minimum of one year in a healthcare setting, preferably in an acute care hospital/facility. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to relate to people in a warm and consistently friendly manner. Teamwork orientation, commitment to customer service excellence and collaborative approach.
  • Knowledge and ability to articulate the cultural and perceptual factors that affect communication between patient, families, providers and interpreter.
  • Excellent customer service/teamwork skills and flexibility.
  • Ability to exercise tact and judgment regarding personal/confidential matters. Performs work in a professional, ethical and reliable fashion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish OR Bilingual in English and Polish.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
