The Infection Control Clinical Coordinator assists with implementing an Infection Control and Epidemiology program for the Medical Center in accordance with accepted medical practice, federal, state, and local regulations, and accrediting organizations. The primary focus of the program is to prevent nosocomial infections through surveillance, recommendation of preventive measures, and education of personnel, medical staff, students, patients, families and the community.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Infection Control Clinical Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Manages the collection, analysis and dissemination of infection control data on nosocomial infections and other adverse events. Surveillance is completed in accordance with the Infection Control Surveillance Plan as approved by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Monthly nosocomial infection data is entered into the computer database.
  • Nosocomial infection data is collected and analyzed weekly.
  • Infection control surveillance data is collected for the National Nosocomial Surveillance System (NNIS) and other collaborative activities listed in the infection control surveillance plan in accordance with their surveillance protocols.
  • All Center for Disease Control (CDC) definitions for nosocomial infections are followed in completing the NNIS protocols.
  • Infection control data concerning reportable diseases is provided to the appropriate agencies within their required time frames.
  • Facilitates problem identification and interventions to directly prevent the transmission of infection.
  • Compliance with Infection Control Policies and Procedures is observed and reported on an ongoing basis as part of daily Surveillance Rounds.
  • Cases of isolation precautions are observed and reported for compliance with Isolation Policies and Procedures and CDC guidelines for isolation precautions.
  • Develops and implements education programs to help prevent nosocomial infections.
  • Develops and presents infection control educational programs as needed. Provides training for staff whenever infection control issues are identified.
  • Assists the Infection Control Nurse Manager in education hospital staff through the Safety Bug Committee, nurse competency days, PSYROC and other opportunities as an ongoing way to provide infection control education to the hospital staff. Sets yearly educational goals with the Infection Control Team.
  • Participates in hospital committees providing infection control expertise as assigned by the infection Control manager.
  • Assists with recommending, developing, and implementing Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
  • New Infection Control Policies are written and presented to the Infection Control Committee when new procedures are introduced. Infection Control policies are reviewed annually under the direction of the Infection Control Nurse Manager.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge for the practice of infection control.
  • Participates in the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC).
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Epidemiology or a Healthcare related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years acute/primary care for specialty and population specific nursing experience
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
