The Genetics Counseling Coordinator, under the general supervision of the director for oncology, this position is responsible for providing genetic counseling to all assigned clients and development of the cancer risk assessment program.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Genetic Counseling Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Assists in scheduling, billing and chart management: Identifies insurance or billing problems and communicates with the insurance coordinator regarding resolution.
2. Coordinates sending of specimens to outside laboratories.: Handles all blood samples exclusively and coordinates authorizations.
3. Develops appropriate written materials for referral practices and patients.: Works with physicians to streamline referral process. Develops patient education materials.  Develops counseling policy and procedures.
4. Provides Genetic counseling services to specialty cancer patients including at all three HMH sites (JSUMC, OMC, RMC): risk assessment (family and medical history).  Provides cancer risk assessment through utilization of BRCAPRO, GAIL and other literature based models.  Uses all stated programs.  Identification of cancer genetic syndromes based on personal and family history of multiple primary cancers.  Keeps abreast of literature to provide up to date recommendations and risk assessment.  Develops continuous patient care based on risk assessment and genetic test results.
5. Identifies and reports barriers to program effectiveness. Works with clinical staff to provide solutions, addresses patient/physician concerns to improve the program.
6. Presents on recent developments in genetics as appropriate.  Provides numerous in-services, lectures and physician CME programs.
7. Survey literature and on-line information to obtain information on cancer genetic risk assessment, genetic syndromes and available genetic testing.
8. Maintains open communication with patients in the event of duty to recontact. Contact patients when additional testing is available.
9. Provides case management for assigned patients:  reporting of normal and abnormal results, etc. Works with patients/physicians to deliver results and explain implications. 
10. Provides education (procedures, laboratory tests, risks and benefits). Spends 2 - 2.5 hours with each patient
11. Provides outreach to physicians/offices and co-workers regarding risk assessment services. Interfacing with other medical disciplines to discuss the utility of genetic risk assessment and genetic testing in their practice.
12. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
13. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1.  Master's Degree in Genetics/Genetics Counseling or a related field.
2. Two (2) or more years of experience in Genetics Counseling.
3. Board certified or Board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, Inc. or RN-genetics organization.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Bi-lingual English/Spanish.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $783.95 Annually

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
