Within the scope of rehabilitation services, assists the physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, audiologist, rehab doctor in the delivery of patient care by performing clerical duties including but not limited to assisting in patient departmental registration and non clinical duties including but not limited to preparation of the treatment area and transports patients to and from the department

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Physical Therapy Aide at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Responsible for the activities involved in the preparation and transport of patients and equipment to and from the department and in other areas of the hospital using proper procedure and good mechanics.
2. When requested, performs errands, messenger duties, answers telephones and records messages as instructed.
3. During treatment and testing session, assists the therapists, therapists assistants, audiologist and the physician with patients making them ready for treatment and testing as instructed.
4. During treatment and testing sessions, attend to the patients regarding their comfort and personal needs as instructed.
5. During treatment and testing sessions, assists the patients with ambulation and transfer of patients.
6. Maintains an accurate laundry count within the department, ordering laundry as needed by calling that department.
7. Performs cleaning duties necessary on all department equipment and treatment areas in accordance with the policy and procedure manual and according to infection control standards of care with documentation kept within the department.
8. Maintains the temperature log of the hydrocollator units, paraffin, freezer, and other equipment according to policy. Documents and reports problems immediately to the supervisor.
9. Initiates work order request for repairs and scheduled maintenance and informs supervisor immediately.
10. Responsible for assisting with the general receptionist support function of the department.  Ensures that accurate and timely departmental communication is facilitated and the department is presented in a positive manner.
11. On a daily basis, answers the phones within 3 rings, screens and refers all incoming calls, to appropriate team members or destination. Provide routine information as authorized.
12. At the request and assistance of a therapist, will assist in obtaining insurance verification, as needed.
13. Assists in scheduling of outpatients, and calling them to remind them of scheduled appointments with instructions regarding registration procedures and having a signed prescription from a physician.
14. Assists in initiating department registration process, including but not limited to obtaining patient ID, insurance information, valid prescription to scan or copy and place in patient file.  Assist patients in completing medical history questionnaires and all other applicable forms and questionnaires as applicable.  Provides patients with attendance policy agreement.
15. Responsible for assisting in preparing patient charts and verify/enter requested patient information in the electronic documentation system.
16. Requires knowledge of the scheduling system, to assist in overall operations and workflow of the department.
17. In the absence of a secretary, will assist the physiatrist in clerical duties and patient care needs as requested.
18. Attends and demonstrates compliance with mandatory educational and safety requirements including but not limited to Fire/Life Safety; Corporate Compliance; Cobra (EMTDA; Standard  Transmission Precautions; OSHA/HCS/TB and Blood borne pathogens; Emergency preparedness, Advance Directives and other department specific programs as required in the performance of his/her job.
19. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
20. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. On the job training, preferably six months in patient care areas.
3. Manual and mechanical dexterity, stamina for lifting

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $17.38 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
