The Vice President, Associate General Counsel is a member of the Legal Services Department which provides legal support and guidance to all departments and affiliates of HMH and at all levels within the organization. The Vice President, Associate General Counsel may have various areas of concentration; for this position, the focus will be in supporting managed care contracting, corporate transactions and our independent physician network, however, support may be provided for other areas such as corporate, complex contract matters, litigation, academic, research, intellectual property and regulatory advising and support. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President/Deputy General Counsel.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Vice President, Associate General Counsel at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provides legal support and guidance to HMH and its affiliated organizations in the VP, Associate General Counsel's area of focus. This may include activities such as legal research, legal advice to clients, litigation counsel supervision, and the drafting/negotiating of various documents such as contracts and organizational documents.
  • Where contract focused, negotiates, drafts and reviews complex contracts prior to execution of the document.
  • Reviews and drafts policies and procedures for HMH.
  • Participates in and leads educational programs on pertinent topics for HMH and affiliated organizations' staff. Reviews applicable legislation and case law as necessary.
  • Reviews, revises and counsels with respect to legal implication of policies, consents, laws, rules, regulations.
  • Participates in HMH and affiliated organizations' cross functional groups and committees, as appropriate.
  • Must be able to own and direct a project whether working alone or by directing paraprofessionals in support of such project
  • Must be able to perform a variety of tasks, often changing from one to another without loss of composure or efficiency.
  • Must be able to provide cross functional leadership to enable the completion of the legal work.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively and tactfully.
  • Must operate with integrity and at the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Demonstrates an ability to operate with a clear vision that supports HMH's vision, mission and shared values; maintains a 'big picture' view: foresees challenges and opportunities; owns and drives action to deliver results.
  • Demonstrates an ability to create a collaborative culture through teamwork within the Legal Services Department that enables HMH to accomplish its mission, vision and strategic priorities.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • BA/BS; JD required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the practice of law related to the area of practice to be assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and learn information technology programs necessary to the operation of the department and area of practice assigned.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and research skills.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, relevant state and federal healthcare law and regulations and healthcare operations.
  • Experience working in an in-house department.
  • Working with, supervising and providing guidance to paraprofessionals.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Licensed to practice law in New Jersey or otherwise authorized to practice as in-house counsel pursuant to R. 1:27-2

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $265,283.20 Annually

Internal Equity: Compensation is determined in a manner consistent with compensation ranges for similar roles within the organization.
Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.


Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
