The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper collection of all specimen types on patients of all ages and in all states of health using proven techniques and appropriate collection devices to ensure safe and adequate collection.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Phlebotomist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Collects intravenous and/or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques.
  • Draws intravenous and capillary blood into proper tubes and culture vials according to the purpose for which the specimen is to be tested.
  • Performs blood drawing procedures.
  • Demonstrates high success rate (95%) on first venipuncture, and performs no more than two venipunctures per patient.
  • Maintains work area with proper level of supplies.
  • Logs refrigerator temperature daily, and informs section head if temperatures fall outside of optimal range.
  • Keeps a log on all patient activity and sends daily to Outreach Section Head.
  • Obtains all necessary information required for a patient test to be performed and billed properly.
  • Travels and performs phlebotomy duties at off-site locations for corporate and municipal health fairs, and delivers specimens to the laboratory as needed.

  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes
    communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Proven phlebotomy skills with patients of all ages.
  • Computer literacy.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification registered or eligible.

Contacts:

  • Regular contact with Medical Center personnel, patients and visitors.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 150 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
