The Manager of Lab Support Services is responsible for the overall performance of all support service duties as assigned to the section: Lab Registration, Lab Transcription, Pathology Assistance, and Total Lab Business Outreach.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager of Lab Support Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Demonstrates effective leadership skills via active management of systems, functions, staff performance, and implementation of consistent accountability methods.
  • Responsible for all aspects of section operations to ensure maximum efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the clerical services, Supervisor of Pathology Assistants, Supervisor of transcription, and clerical support services.
  • Plans and organizes work to provide adequate and proper department coverage for the workload presented.
  • In cooperation with the Vice President, is responsible for the hiring, counseling, termination of employees, and disciplinary actions.
  • Assists the Vice President in developing operational and capital budgets for each of the areas within his/her oversight. Responsible for operating within the budget by controlling departmental costs. Explains any monthly variances.
  • Acts as the liaison with Quest and other departments of the medical center to streamline accessioning, prevent delays in processing, and deliver specimens to appropriate levels of the laboratory within established standards.
  • Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of all registrations and orders generated from within the section.
  • Ensures that all patient identification and labeling protocols are performed according to regulatory standards.
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing within the laboratory as well as across departmental lines.
  • Responsible for the administrative duties with regard to all employees within the section. This includes time and attendance, evaluations, demographic updates and information (MSS), etc.
  • Ensures rapid and appropriate issue resolution through effectively managed follow-up and response. Files, investigates, and reconciles events reported.
  • Coordinates the accurate and complete documentation, training, accreditation, and inspection process for regulatory agencies.
  • Appraises, counsels, and mentors employees assigned to the Section to improve overall job performance and to guide employees toward the attainment of their performance goals.
  • Updates and maintains all clerical procedure manuals within the section.
  • Ensures the proper care, function, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs clerical procedures as required due to workload and staffing needs.
  • Supervises the orientation and in-service education of new and existing personnel assigned to the section including procedural and computer topics.
  •  Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational and Managerial Competencies.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 20 lbs., and stands a minimum of 2 hours a day.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent years of experience.
  • Minimum of 6 or more years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Leadership/Supervisory experience greater than 5 years within a clinical laboratory environment.
  • High degree of analytical ability and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and adherence to detail.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Technician (NCA), or eligible.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Medical Technologist (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA), or Clinical Laboratory Technologist (HHS) or eligible.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $106,329.60 Annually

Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.


Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
