The Business Manager, Emergency Medicine, has responsibility for all phases of fiscal, budget, and business planning within the Department. Responsible for the implementation of fiscal procedures as well as preparation of the department's budget, including preparation of all budget and financial aspects for federal and state agencies. Supervises and coordinates all of the financial and budgetary functions of the department.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Business Manager, Emergency Medicine at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • In conjunction with the Department Chair and Sr. Administrator, determines long and short range financial planning for the department. 
  • Prepares and submits comprehensive fiscal reports containing conclusions and recommendations.
  • Reviews monthly budget variance reports.
  • Reviews expenditures of departments to ensure compliance with budget.
  • Prepares monthly analytical evaluations of variance and makes appropriate recommendations for improvements.
  • Supervises the development of a standard reporting system for assessing work performance.
  • Prepares and updates/reconciles routine departmental reports such as CFTE, ECI and position control.
  • Assists in the development of policies/procedures as directed by the Chair/Sr. Director of Administration.
  • Serves as a department liaison for hospital and medical school committees at the direction of the Sr. Director of Administration.
  • Assists the Sr. Administrator in preparing business plans for new/expansion of services, recruitment of staff/faculty and new program development.
  • Prepares/institutes budget financial plans and individual grants.
  • Formulates forecasts and projects and provides analysis concerning the financial status of the department.
  • Supervises the analysis of statistical, financial operating reports to determine backlogs and issue recommendations. 
  • Designs and implements budgetary control systems.
  • Assists all faculty and staff in the preparation of grant applications, documenting previous expenditures, compiling necessary data, and preparing justifications for projected expenditures.
  • Reviews all grant budgets prepared by each Principal Investigator. 
  • Responsible for creation of annual budget and annual report.
  • Develops, negotiates and analyzes contracts with hospitals and community organizations and provides recommendations to Chair and department leaders. 
  • Works with practice plan administration, university and private legal counsel, Dean's office, accounts payable/receivable, and department finance and other administrative teams.
  • Acts as a security and compliance officer for audits and oversight of all privacy, security, and compliance policies.
  • Maintains knowledge of insurance contracts.
  • Communicates with billing and coding teams to review patient billing statistics and resolve issues.
  • Maintains knowledge of CPT and ICD coding in Emergency Medicine.
  • Maintains knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid payment policies.
  • Prepares and delivers lectures to residents on practice management.
  • Lifts a minimum of 10 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 10 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day. 
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Computer knowledge - Google, Microsoft, etc.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of hospital/facility supervision/office management.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Master's degree, Business Administration

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $95,555.20 Annually

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
