The primary responsibility of the PBX Telephone Operator is to provide assistance and information to patients, families, staff members and Physicians of Solaris Health System. Responds promptly and politely to all callers using designated technology. Answers all incoming calls to the Medical Center's main telephone number and other types of in-bound telephone services as directed. Responds and calls emergency codes in an expedient manner via overhead paging and paging devices. Responds to console alarms and reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. Notifies appropriate telecommunications staff of changes needed in directory when such information comes to their attention. Keeps abreast of hospital events that may generate calls and inquiries from those outside the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Telephone Operator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Answers internal and external calls providing information regarding names, locations, and telephone numbers. Available of on call staff, dialing instructions. Provides patient information in the absence of patient information.
  • Determines call destination and route calls appropriately. Responds to and transfers calls accurately and promptly to appropriate locations; assists with the placement of out-going and interdepartmental calls; contacts staff and physicians via pager, telephone and/or overhead paging system. Receive a variety of emergent calls and coordinate proper response according to procedures
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs. 
  • Prior knowledge of a communications system is preferred. Healthcare experience a plus.
  • PBX switchboard console (NEC preferred). Windows based PC and Office automation suite.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $18.36 Hourly
