As part of a multidisciplinary team and under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) deliver group & individualized services to clients of the Vocational Rehabilitation Department. The OTA works with clients and their relevant others to habilitate & restore their ability to participate in daily occupations, such as ADL, IADL, work and community activities. The OTA works to accommodate the effects of disabilities to improve the quality of life and maximize personal and occupational functionality.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Occupational Therapist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. COTAs are supervised by Occupational Therapists to deliver group and individual services in the clients' plans. The COTA must communicate thoroughly and regularly with the OT & Dept. Leadership to ensure delivery of the plan of care and successful program participation.
2. Instructs, encourages, and assists clients in performing therapeutic activity and activities of daily living, within facility and community environments, specific to each client's needs and goals, as established by the OT, Supervisor & Manager of the department.
3. Demonstrates and implements safe evidence-based treatment techniques and skills with patients.
4. Assists with developing and implementing individualized goals and treatment programs focused on identified client needs and focus on discharge planning..
5. Assists with discharge planning by collaborating with OT, Vocational staff, and other team members. Contributes to client conferences. Reports are completed in a timely manner, reflecting the client's functional status, short and long-term goal achievement and appropriate recommendations.
6. Continuously monitors client's response to treatment and adjusts treatment appropriately, consulting with the OT and Vocational Counselor and noting any changes.
7. Documents client care services by charting in department records. Prepares written documentation such as daily/weekly notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries that are co-signed by the OT. All documentation is completed in a timely manner and in accordance with all state regulations.
8. Identifies and reports all real or potential problems regarding care.
9. Records, reports, and interprets client responses to treatment and care to appropriate members of the interdisciplinary team. Identifies and assesses and changes in client conditions/needs and reports to the Team.
10. Demonstrates team approach to problem solving through frequent communication and collaboration on complex issues to provide appropriate care.
11. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge in assessing the need for and adjustment of DME and assistive devices for clients. Recommends and provides education related to the utilization of appropriate equipment, such as adaptive equipment, DME, and splints.
12. Maintains professional competence and keeps current with OT trends through participation in continuing education, in-service programs, professional staff sessions, reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
13. Fosters good relationships and communications with all Team & School members, client, client physicians, family/significant others.
14. Assists with new Team Member & Student orientation.
15. Regularly attends team meetings and works collaboratively to support all areas of the program including evaluation, mentorship sites, training sites, etc
16. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
17. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Completion of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
2. Current with all Continuing Education (CE) requirements.
3. Perform clinical care professionally.
4. Serve as client advocate and role model to other Team Members.
5. Ability to effectively work on a multidisciplinary team.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Computer skills, including Microsoft Office & Google Suite.
2. Experience with students/adults with disabilities in a school or program setting.
3. Prior work experience with school age and young adult people with disabilities, uses people-first language.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. Occupational Therapist Assistant License or Occupational Therapist Assistant Certification.
2. Valid Driver's License from a USA state.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $28.93 Hourly
