The Senior Exercise Specialist develops and implements appropriate exercise routines in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols. Participates in all program activities with enthusiasm and assure a safe and effective exercise environment.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Senior Exercise Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Demonstrates ability to work with others to achieve and support the mission of the medical center.
  • Performs fitness evaluations and orientations in a safe and effective manner.
  • Evaluates and interprets patient's health history prior to development of patient exercise plan.
  • Uses clinical knowledge of disease management programming and multiple co-morbidities in development of safe, appropriate exercise programming designed to meet individual patient needs.
  • Applies appropriate restrictions or limitations as indicated by any physical or medical conditions.
  • Interacts with clients, prospective clients, and staff in a friendly, understanding, and professional manner while providing appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Recognizes symptom changes/signs of problems and knows the appropriate medical response and processes.
  • Responds immediately to any and all emergency situations in the exercise area. 9. Provides education and collaborates and communicates with clinical staff on exercise programming.
  • Provides patient education and counseling on risk reduction.
  • Works with inpatient and outpatient populations with comorbid medical and psychiatric diagnosis and chronic illness. 
  • Works with child, adult and geriatric populations.
  • Provides patient and community education in life style changes as part of the comprehensive integrative medicine program to treat and prevent chronic illness.
  • Works collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team to develop comprehensive wellness treatment plans.
  • Participate in developing wellness programs in collaboration with the Integrative Medicine Leadership Team.
  • Identifies the needs of the patients served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (e.g., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies. Working Conditions: Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 10 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day. 
  • Adheres to the standards of American College of Sports Medicine.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in exercise science or a health-related field. 
  • 3 - 5 years experience.
  • Experience with patients with multiple co-morbidities.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Professional membership with ACSM or NSCA or NATA.
  • 3 - 5 years experience in a clinical setting.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or Certified Athletic Trainer or Certified Personal Trainer,Exercise Specialist,Clinical Exercise Specialist/Physiologist.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $30.45 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
