Under the general direction of the Physician Billing (PB) Director of Coding and Manager of Education and Audit, this position supervises the Coding Education and Audit team and conducts audits for medical provider documentation while adhering to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Office of Inspector General (OIG) guidelines for Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH). Works professionally, exercising good judgment and ethical standards. Interacts effectively and builds respectful working relationships across the organization. Demonstrates integrity by adhering to high standards of personal and professional conduct. Reliable and maintains a high level of confidentiality within all aspects of job functions and performance.

 

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Supervisor, Education/Audit, Physician Billing at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Monitor all Coding Educators and Auditors in the department to ensure internal workflows are being followed. 
  • Ensure that the productivity and actions of the Coding Educators and Auditors meet and support the overall operational goals of the department and institution. 
  • Counsel Coding Education and Audit teams on actions required to meet minimum performance requirements.
  • Create and facilitate educational programs/presentations for Providers & Staff as they relate to new coding concepts.
  • Prepare educational communications of annual coding updates for all Providers and Staff.
  • Provide coaching and advice to team members for performance and effectiveness including helping team members prioritize daily tasks and resolve complex coding issues.
  • Participate in hiring employees and address individual and team performance needs.
  • Conduct investigations/audits and communicate, educate, and work with the leadership team to troubleshoot issues and/or revise workflows to ensure documentation compliance.
  • Research assigned issues through the use of research skills, automated analysis tools, online research tools, etc.
  • Provide manager coverage as needed.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher; or High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs plus 5 years of supervisory coding experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of physician coding experience in a multi-specialty practice.
  • Minimum 3 years of quality improvement audit experience.
  • Exhibit strong project management and presentation skills.
  • High-level understanding of coding and auditing concepts, American Medical Association (AMA)/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)/Office of Inspector General (OIG)/Federal/State regulations & guidelines.
  • Must have advanced coding education and training with a strong foundation in E/M Coding.
  • Knowledge of data reporting requirements and proficiency in computer skills.
    Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Prior Supervisory experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Certified Professional Medical Auditor within 1 years of entering position.
  • Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator Certification or Certified Coding Specialist or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based or Certified Professional Coder.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $95,555.20 Annually
