A Peer Specialist assists in the provision of Behavioral Health Services to clients and families.  A Peer specialist works as a role model and mentor in the recovery process.

 

The Peer Recovery Specialist will work in the Jersey Shore Paths to Recovery programs where they will support youth and young adults ages 13-25 with ANY substance use disorder and adults 26 and over with opioid use disorder.  They can conduct screenings, perform brief interventions, provide recovery support, navigate treatment options, schedule follow up appointments, and arrange wraparound support (e.g. Lyft to appointments).

 

*This is a grant funded position.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Peer Recovery Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Assists clients in choosing, obtaining and keeping wellness and healthy lifestyle related goals and in developing self-management skills.
2. Compiles and shares self-help, wellness and recovery, and healthy lifestyle resources for clients, families, and team members. Selectively uses self-disclosure to inspire, support, and motivate others.
3. Assists in scheduling integrated health care appointments.  Provides assistance and advocacy at appointments and with all follow-up needs.
4. Teaches and assists clients, families, and significant others based on client needs.
5. Assists in the development and facilitation of individual and group-based wellness and recovery activities.
6. Assess crisis situations, intervenes as necessary.  Informs supervisor and other team members of any crisis.
7. Serves as a mentor and role model.
8. Participates as a treatment team member. Collaborates from a peer provider perspective.
9. Provides individualized services through face to face contact onsite or in the community and/or through telephone/video contact or telehealth.
10. Attends supervision as scheduled, with agenda, and follows through with agreed upon recommendations. 
11. Collaborates with other providers to identify and monitor needs and outcomes related to integrated health care. 
12. Participates in the Plan Do Check Act process.
13. Follows policy for all clinical documentation and completes within the required timeframe.
14. Ensures critical judgement and decision making reflects professional guidelines, code of ethics, and utilization of available resources in a collaborative approach.
15. Adheres to HIPPA standards and maintains client confidentiality.
16. Attends training and ongoing staff development opportunities to enhance skills.
17. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
18. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. One year experience in the substance use and/or mental health field
3. Peer specialist/provider training
4. Personal lived experience with substance use and/or mental health recovery
5. Strong verbal and written communication skills


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Associates degree or higher in psychiatric rehabilitation, wellness coaching or other related field.


Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) and/or Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)
2. Valid NJ driver's license

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $22.77 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
