Under the direction of a registered nurse preceptor, student nurses practice selected skills and gain confidence in the acute care environment. Students meet with the program coordinator to share experiences. A variety of educational topics are presented by guest speakers at the meetings.
Externship dates: Dec 29, 2025 - Jan 16, 2026
1. Performs assigned components of assessment in an ongoing and systematic manner focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, and cognitive status.
2. Performs data collection and documentation of I&O, vital signs, weights, and reports these and/or significant changes.
3. Provides hygienic care, positions patients, pre/post-operative care, post mortem care, ambulating, and meals.
4. Provides a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly, communicating with the RN immediately for any change in patient's condition.
5. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
6. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
7. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Currently matriculated in a Board of Nursing approved BSN program to prepare for registered nurse licensure and be eligible to begin the final (senior) year of the respective nursing program.
3. Ability to work varied days and varied hours.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher strongly preferred.
