The Organ Preservation Technologist will provide organ preservation services and maintain the organ preservation lab under the management of the Organ Preservation Manager and direction of the Director of Organ Transplantation. Additionally, the organ preservation technician will work in collecting and reporting UNOS data for the pre-transplant. This position will help the pre-transplant team with data management and quality initiatives in an administrative capacity during office hours when not assisting in a transplant procurement.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Organ Preservation Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
 
Organ Preservation Lab:
1. Observe and comply with Organ Preservation Lab Standard Operating Procedures.
2. Perform personnel training in advanced organ perfusion methods.
3. Assist in Organ Preservation Lab supply ordering, supply rotation and proper storage.
4. Perform organ evaluation according to UNOS protocol prior to transplant including:
  A. Organ label and packaging verification, sending of tissue to the Lab for donor/recipient crossmatch.
  B. Sterile kidney anatomy verification and dissection to prepare organ for machine perfusion evaluation.
  C. Performing kidney needle and wedge biopsy according to the SOP.
  D. Adjusting LifePorts parameters as needed while performing kidney evaluation.
  E. Reporting kidney anatomy.
  F. Monitor, maintain, and report perfusion parameters findings to the surgeon.
  G. Completing UNOS app related to the organ anatomy and preservation parameters.
  H. Collecting, storing and analyzing collected organ perfusion data.
  I. Assisting surgeon in final kidney preparation prior to transplantation.
  J. Assist with organ procurement procedures.
 
Data Collection and Reporting:
1. Collect and prepare pre-transplant documents for regulatory reporting and internal QAPI initiatives.
2. Collect and submit data related to Transplant Services according to the UNOS, AOPO and hospital protocols.
3. Analyze and report data to the Chief of Transplant Services and research committee members.
4. Participate in research projects including collecting specimens, data entry, sample process and shipping.

 

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Bachelor's degree and/or 3 years of surgical technology experience.
2. Knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and physiology is necessary.
3. Must be able to work weekends and recognized Holidays on a rotating basis during on-call schedule.
4. Must be familiar with organ preservation devices (LifePort, ORS or RM-3, Waters).
5. Knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and physiology.
6. Demonstrates ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing and high- pressure clinical environment.
7. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills required to facilitate team building and partnering with colleagues and peers.
8. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Apps, EPIC and UNET Portal.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Master's or PhD degree program in related profession.
2. Knowledge of sterile OR environment. Advance surgical dissection skills.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. Valid Driver's License from a USA state.

 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

1. Certified Surgical Technologist. 
2. Certified Transplant Preservationist.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $34.65 Hourly
