Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Maternal Child Health Associate at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Transcribes and transmits doctor's orders to appropriate areas under supervision of a registered
    nurse, and confers with the charge nurse and/or nurse assigned to patient, regarding scheduling patients
    activities and tests. Consistently follows up on written and oral instructions; promptly reports matters
    requiring immediate nursing intervention.
  • Performs clerical functions for physicians within the Unit Secretary's sphere of responsibility.
  • Answers telephone and intercom, takes messages, and communicates messages to the appropriate
    person.
  • Prepares and keeps current census sheet, TPR sheets, transportation log, dietary requisitions and
    other forms, and delivers them to the proper department as necessary.
  • Performs clerical duties related to the admission, registration and discharge of patients.
  • Initiates pre-operative checklist on the evening before surgery and updates on day of surgery; signs in
    the allocated spaces.
  • Compiles new charts, maintains current charts, and enters patient information on the charts and
    Kardexes.
  • Performs all patient record activities and charting transcriptions with close attention to detail and
    accuracy. Ensures that complete information is filled in on all forms (requisitions, transfers, work
    orders, dietary requisitions, graphic sheets, I & O sheets, etc.); keeps current census sheets. Delivers
    completed forms to the proper departments as necessary.
  • Routinely files test results and control copies under appropriate corresponding dividers. Always
    ensures that current lab print-out shows all results; questions and verifies any discrepancies or
    deficiencies; discards and replaces old printouts and corresponding control copies; dates and signs all results when filed.
  • Routinely stamps and applies door tags, bed tags, charge tags, I & O sheets and NPO tags, as required.
    Verifies orders and allows no errors.
  • Maintains patient care kardexes, medication kardexes, and bedside computer patient activity sheet, to ensure completeand accurate information in order to facilitate patient follow-up. Ensures that all are complete, accruate and 
    up to date for all patients.
  • Disassembles all charts of discharged patients within the same shift that the patient was discharged
    from the hospital.
  • Posts the patient's allergies in RED ink on: chart, Patient Care Kardex, Medication Kardex, Doctors
    Order Sheets. Posts allergy sticker over the head of the patients bed. Allows no errors in this procedure.
    Initiates and disseminates all patient charges; ensures that all charges are recorded and sent to data
    processing.
  • Schedules clinic appointments for patient examinations and treatments, makes arrangements that
    ensure all patients reach the scheduled procedure on time.
  • Places information accurately into EBC registry. Places charges accurately in computer in a timely
    manner.
  • Obtains demographic as well as financial information on all patients coming in for ER/Outpatient/Pre-
    admission testing visits into the hospital.
  • Records and verifies all pertinent information from insurance companies in respect to a patient's
    authorization for services, eligibility and benefits.
  • Possesses ability to read and understand HDX insurance verification system and identify any
    potential problems with the insurance carrier.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction
    scores for department and Medical Center.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Six months clerical experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful. Hospital,
    physician office or insurance company experience preferred.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $21.42 Hourly
