The EKG Technician performs EKG testing in all areas of the hospital as ordered by the physician. To respond to all STAT and CODE calls. To be alert to irregularities in tracings that requires immediate medical attention.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an EKG Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Responsible for obtaining an accurate and well defined EKG tracing.
2. Responsible for the cleanliness and restocking of EEG and EKG machines according to department policy and procedure.
3. Responsible for verifying on a daily basis that the EEG and EKG machines are functional. If malfunctioning, follow department policy in reporting.
4. Responsible to respond to CODE BLUE calls and initiate a continuous EKG as outlined in department policy and procedure.
5. Provides competent assessment treatment, and/or care to patients appropriate for the individualized and developmental needs for the ages of those patients served.
6. Responsible for preparing tracing for interpretation assuring 24-hour turnaround time.
7. Responsible for administering an accurate and well defined EKG test.
8. Responsible for the preparation of the tracing for interpretation by physician, typing all reports, and delivery to designated areas.
9. Is responsible to transport EKG machine to floor and verify physician's order in chart as outlined on computer printout.
10. Responsible for verifying patient identification via wristband and bed name plate on every patient.
11. Responsible for thoroughly explaining procedure, alleviating patient fears, and answering any and all questions according to department policy and procedure.
12. Demonstrates competency in assessing, analyzing, and utilizing data for the purpose of obtaining information necessary for effective decision making and performance improvement processes.
13. Responsible for all pertinent information on the tracing, name, date, age, medications, condition of patient, time of tracing, as outlined in department policy and procedure.
14. After completion of tracing, reviews EKG for artifact and/or technical problems according to department policy.
15. Upon completion of tracing, a copy is left at the nursing station for review by ordering physicians as outlined in department policy and procedure.
16. Follows established department procedure to retrieve patient data from Tracemaster, entering name, date and medical record number.
17. Edits interpretation of tracings in an accurate, neat and timely manner as assigned.
18. Types interpretation of tracings in an accurate, neat, and timely manner as assigned.
19. Proofreads all typed interpretations, revising and changing as necessary to ensure accuracy, prior to submission or distribution.
20. Responsible for explaining and completing tests according to department policy, so that the patient is both at ease and comfortable.
21. Reviews information on patients chart, extracting information pertinent to EKG reading according to department policy.
22. Prepares patient's head and sets up for test, measuring head, and placing electrodes according to international 10/20 electrode system
23. Performs test, carefully observing patient and tracing, making appropriate notations on tracing.
24. Make sure all pertinent information is listed on tracing; i.e., name, date, age, floor, condition of patient, medications, and any other information that may be helpful to the physician for interpretation.
25. Keeps a log of all completed tracings with name, date and file number.
26. Schedules outpatient appointments for testing in the appointment book.
27. Maintains an accurate filing system for all tracings performed by storing on CD and archiving by number and year.
28. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
29. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Minimum of one year of specialized training in EEG or equivalent experience.
3. Minimum six months experience in EEG/EKG.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $20.32 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
