Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Patient Safety Attendant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the telesitter software.
  • Maintains visual observation at all times. Verbally redirects patients over audio and/or visual devices that are in the patient rooms. Immediately notifies the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Sets up telesitter devices in patient rooms that require observation.
  • Makes rounds to patient rooms that are set up with virtual observation to ensure proper equipment placement and working conditions
  • Participates in handoff reporting at start and end of shift with other patient safety attendants, reviewing pertinent patient information and behaviors
  • When providing in-person direct observation, stays no more than arm`s length away from the patient at all times
  •  Contacts the registered nurse if there is a need to leave the patient’s bedside for any reason - never leave the patient alone or with a friend or family member unless directed to do so by the registered nurse.
  • Completes observation records and reports as required.
  • Keeps bed rails in the position directed by the registered nurse. Keeps bed in the lowest possible position
  • Keeps call bell within reach to call for assistance if needed.
  • Removes all sharp objects from patient's reach if directed by the nurse (razors, knives, glass, pens, pencils, scissors, etc.)
  • Prevents patients from pulling out tubes, IVs, drains, dressings, etc. by explaining that it is something needed to make them better
  • If the patient is in restraints make sure they stay in place and never apply or remove restraints without the registered nurse. Informs the nurse immediately if a patient has loosened a restraint or disrupted a tube or dressing
  • Reports any unusual behavior to the nurse i.e. confusion or disorientation (the patient does not know who they are or where they are), extreme sleepiness, hallucinations (the patient thinks they hear voices or see bugs / people who are not there).
  • Reports any unusual comments to the nurse such as `I want to die`, `I feel like killing myself`, `They won’t stop me next time’.
  • Reports anything unusual to the registered nurse immediately including visitors or family acting in an inappropriate manner or in a manner that is upsetting to the patient.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Assists with hygiene, toileting, etc. under the direct supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 16 patients at one time and always remaining alert while on duty
  •  Ability to stay mobile according to the patients` movements including the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using audio/visual devices.
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient concerns and behavioral changes
  • Efficient in multitasking and able to prioritize simultaneous situations
  • Must be able to work in situations with isolation precautions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Prior experience working in a hospital setting
  • Prior experience in a direct patient care role

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • BLS required

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $17.24 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
