The Chief Boiler Room Engineer coordinates, directs and supervises employees engaged in the operation and maintenance of steam generation, central air conditioning, chilled water system and all the units it supplies along with the Power Plant equipment at the Perth Amboy Division.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

Steam Distribution

  • Manage the operation of two 600 HP Clever Brooks boilers.
  • Manage the blow down of each boiler.
  • Manage the cleaning of the boiler nozzle.
  • Maintain proper handling of fuel temperature, pumps, electric and steam heaters to the boilers.
  • Maintain the proper chemical testing and water treatment to the water and boilers. 
  • Manage the steam pressure needs of the Medical Center at all times.
  • Maintain a cost effective fuel/steam usage by proper operation, sizing and placement of steam traps throughout the Medical Center.
  • Maintain the proper flow and operation of all condensate stations including the operation of the D.A. tank in the Power Plant.
  • Maintain the boiler burners at optimal operating efficiency at all times through the proper operation of the economizer. 
  • Proper logging on blow- downs, water treatment, boiler maintenance operation, including fuel usage, fuel consumed versus steam production and steam pressure, on a daily basis to be incorporated into a monthly report to be completed on the second working day of each month.
  • Check operation for compliance of safety regulations and maintain optimum standards of safety and fire prevention regulations among employees. 
  • Initiate the ordering of fuel, water treatment chemicals, boiler chemicals and general repair supplies for upkeep of the Power Plant within the authorization of the Director/Plant Operations/ Maintenance.
  • Maintain the proper state licensing credentials and all mandated equipment.

Control Chilled Water System

  • Manage operation of the three chillers, and the logging of the pressures.
  • Manage and maintain the operation of the three condensing water towers along with the chemical feeding of the water.
  • Manage and log the proper G.P.M. of chilled water to each supply unit.
  • Responsible through the contracting vendor to maintain proper winterizing and spring start up and emergency calls of the chillers. 
  • Air handling units, responsible for the operation, preventive maintenance and cleanliness of all air handling systems, including the machine rooms in which they are located.

Compressed Air, Medical Suction Unit and Plant Air Conditioning

  • Responsible for logging and maintaining the proper PSI, 100 lbs. of compressed air to the Medical Center including the maintenance and cleanliness of the units.
  • Responsible for the proper operation of the suction compressor, to maintain 26 inches of vacuum with a differential of 15 inches for restart including the maintenance and cleanliness of the units.
  • Responsible for the proper operation of the plant air compressor system.

Water Softener

  • Manage the responsibility of maintaining logs and proper softness of water (under 4 ppm) along with the testing, regeneration and level of salt in the brine tank. Domestic Hot/Cold Water System In The E.S.F. Building
  • Manage the responsibility to the filtration and back flushing of the water filtering system.
  • The responsibility of logging and maintaining the city water booster pumps in proper operating (70-80 PSI) and alarm free condition.
  • Manage the logging, monitoring and maintenance of hot water at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit maximum, through steam and recycling pumps.

Emergency Generator

  • Manage the responsibility to have the emergency generators in top operational running condition at all times, through preventive maintenance, weekly testing (under load), and the utilization of the electrical tie breakers to combine loads during a test or failure of any generator.
  • To maintain a running log of hours in operation, down time and repairs.

Other 

  • To interview sales representatives and make recommendations for purchase of equipment and supplies within established hospital policies.
  • Check time sheets, schedule holiday and vacation time not to interfere with. the operation of the E.S.F. Building.
  • Subject to approval, to interview, select and hire personnel, to determine job service objectives, work method and performance standards and appraise performance of employees.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Blue Seal Operating Engineer License.
  • Five (5) years boiler room experience or four (4) years boiler room experience and one (1) year maintenance in addition to one (1) year of refrigeration experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Not Applicable.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • New Jersey Blue Seal License.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Red Seal Operating Engineer License.

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $106,329.60 Annually

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
