This position is under the direction of the Director of Operating Room Services. Manages the department of Perfusion Services and ensures that all staff completes duties as assigned and follows the policies and procedures of the department and hospital. This position will also manage the Anesthesia support staff, collaboratively, under the direction of the Department of Anesthesia Chair. Responsible under the direction of the primary surgeon, cardiologist, and  other responsible physician, to set up and operate such devices as the heart lung machine for  cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, ECMO, ventricular assists, intra-aortic balloon pumps, autologous blood  transfusions, and provide standby support for the heart catheterization laboratory as needed.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager of Perfusion Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Conducts cardiopulmonary bypass safely in accordance with the department's policy and procedures, and the standard accepted practices of the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology and the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
2. Clinically responsible as a primary perfusionist on a minimum of 40 cases and a maximum not to exceed 75 percent of the average caseload of a staff perfusionist.
3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide extracorporeal services to patients from adult to geriatric. 
4. Makes appropriate changes to equipment, supplies, and techniques to best meet the needs of the patient.
5. Manages the autotransfusion utilizing the Cell Saver device.
6. Provides 24 hours call coverage for consultation on cases utilizing autotransfusion.
7. Manages the intra aortic balloon, Impella and ECMO pumps and ensures that they are operational and routinely serviced in collaboration with the O.R. and Invasive Cardiology.
8. Provides rental pumps as needed.
9. Oversees the quality control program to validate correct instruments performance for blood gas sampling. (Hemochron, I-Stat and TEG instruments).
10. Ensures that quality controls are completed daily.
11. Performs annual proficiency testing utilizing the College of American Pathologist Survey program.
12. Develops the department's policy and procedures manual and annually reviews it. 
13. Develops the department's Performance Improvement Program including reporting as required to the Performance Improvement Committee.
14. Performs staff performance evaluations/Quality assurance and ensures staff is proficient.
15. Schedules all employees and maintains adequate personnel coverage to provide a 24 hour service.
16. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to  those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
17. Maintains/orders adequate stock/par levels of all disposables associated with cardiac surgery as related to cardiovascular perfusion.
18. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
19. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Minimum of 5 or more years of experience in Perfusion Services.
3. Minimum of 1 year experience in Perfusion Services Management.
4. Graduate from a CAHEA accredited perfusion training program.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Bachelor degree in Perfusion Technology or other related science or its equivalent.
2. Prior leadership experience in a clinical environment.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. Certified in Cardiovascular Perfusion.
2. Perfusionist License.
3. BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $203,528.00 Annually

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
