The Biorepository Technologist is responsible for performing and recording laboratory tests that encompass a broad range of sophistication and assists in quality control for studies, research and development of new procedures, teaching students and orientation for new personnel. This role involves biospecimen processing and banking, identification, archiving, storage, retrieval and shipping of tissue specimens (solid and liquid) that are located in theHMHN BioR. Sophisticated testing technology is employed within appropriate quality control parameters. The Biorepository Technologist may be responsible for performing basic and translational laboratory processing techniques related duties and may require using scientific approaches and methods that involve experiments requiring constant monitoring and analyses throughout the day. This role will maintain communication with Biorepositories within the HMH network.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Biorepository Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

  • Processes patient samples, uses Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database for storage/bar-coding and retrieval of tissue specimens required for approved research protocols
  • Quality control of the banked samples / tracking samples for appropriate storage and quality control for stability of materials.
  • Coordinates with Pathology and network clinics for handling, procurement and processing of human specimens.
  • Prepares tissue samples according to protocol requirements.
  • Coordinates handling and shipping of procured tissue samples according to state and federal requirements.
  • Coordinates and prepares BioR specimens according to accepted tissue procurement techniques. Maintains record of submitted specimens.
  • Performs complex as well as routine procedures in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs the duties of lead technologist and/or is responsible for running the section when required. Interprets and correlates test results with the patient's diagnosis.
  • Performs the duties of Bioinformatics and Data Analyst and/or is responsible for running the section when required.
  • Proficient in the use of Structured Query Languages for building, maintaining and extracting biospecimen data from relational databases.
  • Data cleaning, de identification, and interpretation of clinical data collected from biospecimen samples.
  • Performs routine maintenance on sophisticated instrumentation.
  • Serves as on site Biorepository Honest Broker, being the liaison between the researcher, identifiable specimen and patient information.
  • Coordinates with clinical teams, investigators, network biorepository sites and external collaborators for processing human specimens.
  • Maintains organized record keeping of physical and electronic research requests, consents and chain of custody
  • Works with potentially infectious material in a BSL2 environment.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor`s degree.
  • General understanding of Liquid Handling and Automation.
  • Flexible in work schedule. Must be available to stay late to process samples as needed.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Good organization and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in basic science lab work.
  • Experience with or ability to learn the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $30.45 Hourly
