Performs lead pharmacist activities in the daily operations of the Pharmacy Department.

 

***Licensed New Jersey Pharmacist. BS Pharmacy or PharmD and PGY1 residency required. 

***Acute care experience, including general operations and IV compounding, specifically adhering to USP 797 and 800.

***The position is a day/flex shift, with weekend coverage as needed.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Senior Pharmacist II at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Interprets, transcribes, prepares and dispenses medications, from medication orders, under the unit dose system, following hospital, licensing, ASHP and regulatory requirements and guidelines. Age appropriate guidelines must be followed in this function.
  • Interprets, transcribes, prepares and dispenses IV admixtures, including LVP, IVPB, and TPN under the guidelines of the IV admixture program, following hospital, licensing, ASHP and regulatory requirements and guidelines. Age appropriate guidelines must be followed in this function.
  • Interprets, transcribes, prepares and dispenses chemotherapeutic agents following hospital, licensing, ASHP and regulatory requirements and guidelines. OSHA requirements must be following in this function.
  • Monitors patient therapy for rational drug therapy, achieved by regularly maintaining and updating the knowledge of information and techniques required to perform these duties, in particular, those appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Coordinates, on a daily basis, departmental activities including, but not limited to supervising and delegating tasks to pharmacists, technicians and other support personnel.
  • Trouble-shoots patient care issues and patient care services requests, for any occurring problem and present a resolution.
  • Coordinates, supervises and trains Pharmacy personnel to provide Unit Dose, IV, Oncology and retail services following appropriate hospital, regulatory, licensing and OSHA regulations.
  • Assists in the preceptor program with the affiliated high schools and colleges of Pharmacy.
  • Operates and maintains the SMS Pharmacy system and the PYXIS system with proficiency and accuracy.
  • Coordinates the retail Pharmacy functions and operates the SMS system with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assists in the inventory control and procurement of drugs and supplies, insuring and maintaining proper storage and handling of drugs and supplies, in accordance to FDA standards.
  • Acts in the capacity of liaison for the pharmaceutical companies and the management of the department.
  • Participates in the performance improvement activities of the department.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  • Performs drug utilization reviews, adverse drug reaction monitoring and clinical assessment of patients, assisting the clinical coordinator and/or the Senior Pharmacist I.
  • Assists in the preparation of information for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Participates in hospital committees as needed.
  • Performs and participates in the educational programs, for Pharmacy Staff, Medical Staff, Nursing and ancillary personnel.
  • Participates in community service programs.
  • Assists in the technician function, as needed.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
  • Ability to coordinate, teach, and mentor students and team members. 

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Possess Bachelors or PharmD degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy.
  • Prior experience of at least 3 years of hospital Pharmacy practice.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Supervisor or lead experience and retail experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Licensed to practice Pharmacy in New Jersey, by the NJ Board of Pharmacy.

Working Conditions:

  • General office conditions with high stress environment
  • Extensive employee and outside contacts
  • Works indoors in a well lighted and ventilated area
  • Some direct exposure to chemicals, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed
  • Willingness to work with realization that errors and incompetence may have serious consequences to patients

Physical Demands:

  • Long periods of sitting with frequent standing or moving to other areas
  • Requires periods of keying on computer to type or input information
  • Constant verbal communication in person or using the phone
  • Frequent reading of medication orders and prescriptions
  • Bending, lifting, pushing and lifting heavy objects occurs occasionally

Mental Demands: 

  • Ability to read and concentrate frequently to check accuracy
  • Requires the flexibility to perform activities due to interruptions and changes in schedule, and demands
  • Ability to deal with stress of dealing with internal and external customers, frequent interruptions, and working on multiple tasks
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and unbiased attitude when dealing with the staff
  • Work requires the ability to memorize detail, alertness and skill in pharmacy practice
  • Organization in a high pressure environment

Starting Minimum Rate

Starting at $74.19 Hourly
