Working under the direction of a credentialed PI at Hackensack Meridian Health, the Intern, Research handles tasks as assigned by physician mentors. This role will primarily be involved in a research project under a physician mentor with a focus in the area of cancer care. This role provides support as needed and gains on the job experience. The projects are IRB-approved protocols submitted by staff physician mentors.
The Center for Discovery and Innovation- CDI was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic and to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases. The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 39 labs, 200+ scientists and allied personnel supported by 78 NIH and DoD grants and more than 87 other grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, rheumatology and pharmacology.
The research intern would be working under the guidance of principal investigator. The research intern would be working on a project analyzing steroid sensitivity in patients. For this project, the research intern would coordinate sample acquisition from the research coordinator. The research intern would be performing the fluorescein labeled dexamethasone binding assay for human samples. This involves monocyte isolation from the human blood samples acquired and performing binding studies with fluorescein labeled dexamethasone. The research intern would also assist with laboratory maintenance and supply ordering for this project. The research intern would also assist with data acquisition and analysis. Therefore, the intern should have experience in lab techniques including: experience in buffer and reagent preparation; experience in cell tissue culture work and experience in cell staining and/or cell-based assay work.
A day in the life of a Intern, Research at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
The lab headed by the PI Steve Ghanny is a well established group working on analyzing steroid sensitivity in patients which requires coordination of sample acquisition and fluorescein labeling dexamethasone binding assay for human samples, and performing binding studies with fluorescein labeled dexamethasone. A candidate with experience in buffer and reagent preparation; cell tissue culture work and experience in cell staining and/or cell-based assay work would thrive in this environment.
