The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, optimization, and continuous improvement of the hospital's building automation and control systems. This position ensures reliable operation of HVAC, energy management, environmental controls, and critical infrastructure systems that support patient care, regulatory compliance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort. The BAS Technician works closely with Plant Operations, Facilities Management, Engineering, Infection Prevention, and clinical departments to maintain safe and compliant healthcare environments.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Building Auto Systems Tech at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

  • Monitor, operate, and maintain the hospital's Building Automation System (BAS).
  • Troubleshoot and repair control systems, controllers, sensors, actuators, and network communication devices.
  • Optimize HVAC system performance to maintain temperature, humidity, pressure relationships, and air changes in critical care environments. 
  • Support operating rooms, isolation rooms, pharmacies, laboratories, sterile processing, and other regulated healthcare spaces.
  • Respond to BAS alarms, investigate root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on BAS hardware and software. 
  • Configure and modify graphics, trends, schedules, alarms, and reports. 
  • Coordinate with HVAC technicians, electricians, and outside vendors during repairs and upgrades.
  • Maintain system documentation, control drawings, sequences of operation, and equipment records. 
  • System performance data and recommend operational improvements.
  • Support energy management initiatives and sustainability goals. 
  • Assist with capital projects, system upgrades, commissioning, and retro-commissioning efforts. 
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulatory standards and accreditation requirements. 
  • Provide on-call support for critical building systems as required.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Associate degree in HVAC, Electrical Technology, Building Automation, Controls Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience with building automation systems and controls.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical systems, and control sequences. 
  • Prior experience with BAS platforms such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, or similar systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and IP-based control networks. 
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and control drawings. 
  • Experience in acute-care hospital environments. 
  • Experience supporting Joint Commission, CMS, and healthcare compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with infection control risk assessments and environmental monitoring requirements. 
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Understanding of HVAC control strategies and energy optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of hospital critical environments and life-safety requirements. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced healthcare setting. 
  • Proficiency with BAS software, trending, reporting, and analytics tools. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: 

  • Experience with healthcare facility operations preferred.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Automation Professional (CAP). Candidates who do not possess a CEM or CAP may be considered based on an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and progressively responsible professional experience in building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, energy management, or healthcare facility operations.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $46.64 Hourly

Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
