The Senior Safety Specialist, under the direction of the Dir, Network Safety Officer, will be responsible for administering or overseeing HMH's Environmental Health and Safety Management programs and perform all job functions listed below in accordance with Network procedures and in compliance with regulatory agencies.

 

This position will be fully onsite.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Senior Safety Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Participate in the identification, development, implementation, and maintenance of HMH programs, policies, and procedures created to ensure sustainable compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Travel and provide support to all HMH facilities, including hospitals, long term care, ambulatory care, and home care facilities for Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) related matters.
  • Participate in and provide support to Network and local EH&S related programs/committees as an EH&S representative, e.g. Environment of Care, Safe Patient Handling, Security, Water Management, Infection Prevention, Workplace Violence, etc.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis, Apparent Cause Analysis, in collaboration with other HMH Departments.
  • Develop, implement, arrange and conduct EH&S related training programs.
  • Monitor all applicable regulatory agencies (e.g. OSHA, TJC, and State of New Jersey policies and standards) for changes.
  • Collaborate with other Departments and Vendors to reduce Team Member injuries.
  • Participate and provide support in construction and fire/life safety related activities, such as pre and post inspections, attending project meetings, giving design guidance, assisting in ICRA, PCRA, and ILSM, Fire drills, and collaborating with AHJ.
  • Assist in the management of all OSHA programs in collaboration with applicable Departments.
  • Promptly assists with response to real and perceived emergencies (e.g., hazardous materials spills, fire alarms, odors, indoor air quality concerns).
  • Conduct and perform EH&S related risk assessments, e.g.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis
  • Conducts and participates in regulatory audits and rounding to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies/AHJ (i.g. OSHA, EPA, NJDEP, TJC, CMS, etc), mediation projects (e.g., asbestos abatement, mold, lead).
  • Arrange, in collaboration with Team Health; proactive measures for high risk groups identified to reduce injuries.
  • Serves as a liaison between vendors and construction project managers for environmental and indoor air quality reactive measures for high risk groups identified to reduce injuries.
  • Conducts routine EH&S surveys and inspections (e.g., hazard surveillance, laboratory safety, interim life safety, QA for penetrations and fire doors, staff knowledge, office ergonomics).
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree with 3 years of safety experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of TJC's Environment of Care and Life safety standards and requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state and local regulations pertaining to safety and fire safety; ability to identify and evaluate hazard and risks and make effective recommendations based upon comprehensive, regulatory compliant assessments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials; ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to conduct team member injury investigations.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • OSHA Hazwoper - 40 hour training.
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA.1910.134 and other sections of 29 CFR 1910.
  • Knowledge of EPA and local NJDEP requirements.
  • Public speaking and training experience.
  • Performance and project management skills.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Certified healthcare safety professional (CHSP).
  • Certified healthcare fire safety professional (CHFSP).
  • OSHA 30-hour training certification.

Starting Minimum Rate

Minimum rate of $97,011.20 Annually

Budget and Grant Funding: Departmental budgets and any grant funding associated with the job position may impact the pay that can be offered.


Some jobs may also be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or commissions not reflected in the starting rate. Certain positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
