The Psychology Fellow will be a full time, temporary staff member responsible for patient care under the direct supervision of the Psychology Education Coordinator or other Supervising Psychologists in the Northern Regional Diagnostic Center for Child Abuse and Neglect. The Fellow will conduct evaluations and treatment of youth and adults referred for concerns of child maltreatment by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, as well as through the offices of the Law Guardian, of the Public Defender, and other law enforcement entities. The Fellow will also be expected to conduct mental health screenings associated with the Comprehensive Health Examination for Children [CHEC] program, and suicide screens as needed. This role will participate in didactics and demonstrate mastery of their knowledge though assessment and on the job application. The Fellow may also have an educative role for psychology externs at the pre-doctoral level, under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. This position is responsible for performing the scope of duties and responsibilities listed below in accordance with the American Psychological Association, New Jersey Board of Psychological Examiners guidelines and standards set forth by JCAHO.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a Forensic Psychology Fellow conducting forensic psychological assessments at the AHCH/ Northern Regional Diagnostic Center for Child Abuse and Neglect and communicating results thoroughly, transparently and based on state of the art theory and knowledge through written reports.
  • Provides, as a Forensic Psychology Fellow, individual and group psychotherapy at the AHCH/ Northern Regional Diagnostic Center for Child Abuse and Neglect, applying evidence-based and theoretically-supported interventions to referred families.
  • Advocates for appropriate resources for clients and families based on assessed needs in accordance with professionally accepted standards.
  • Collaborates effectively with other staff members, referral sources and social support networks to provide evaluation and treatments services for clients and families.
  • Serves as a liaison for abuse consultations within the medical center as part of a multidisciplinary response from AHCH.
  • Participates in forensic interviewing training, including Finding Words NJ, for qualification as a child forensic interview specialist.
  • Triages and responds to emergent psychological issues within the center as determined by the Psychology Education Coordinator or Supervising Psychologist.
  • Assists clients in effectively managing crises.
  • Observes and participates in expert witness training on cases seen by The Audrey Hepburn Children¿s House under the direct supervision of the Psychology Education Coordinator or Supervising Psychologist in both criminal and civil matters.
  • Conducts research in a mutually agreed-upon area of interest between The Audrey Hepburn Children¿s House and the Psychology Fellow and disseminates research findings within and from the Center.
  • Masters relevant didactic training enabling application to ABPP/ABFP for consideration for candidacy as a Forensic Diplomate.
  • Fellows have the option of obtaining experience in clinical, forensic neuropsychology, including assessment of children and family members and corresponding community outreach.
  • Attends Pediatric and Psychiatry Grand Rounds for on-going and continuing education; participates in, and assists in, the organization of statewide training for all disciplines involved in the New Jersey child protection system; participates in State and National organizations that address child abuse and neglect issues and the application of forensic psychology in child maltreatment and family violence.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

 

  • Doctoral degree in psychology with significant training in child or family psychology.
  • Forensic psychology or treatment of trauma internship.
  • Eligible for psychology licensure or permit in the State of New Jersey.
